It’s Guys on Ice meets Chopped for A Night at the Opera.
Fish Fry – Comedy, Opera, & a Secret Recipe is a fun-filled collaboration between TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater and Fresco Opera Theatre celebrating Wisconsin’s beloved dining tradition.
Sal, the long-time proprietor of the nearly-legendary Sal’s Place, home of the best fish fry on Lake Cattywompus, plans to join the professional pickle ball circuit and needs someone to manage things in her absence. She announces a challenge – the person who successfully completes all three tasks will get Sal’s secret recipe and the restaurant. As three contestants vie for the top spot, and two eccentric tourists hunt the lake’s fabled Giant Muskie, there’s lots of action, intrigue, and unexpected romance.
Fish Fry plays with the conventions of opera, such as people, or in this case, fish, singing a long time before their deaths. It features arias from famous operas, but with new lyrics, such as the Papageno/Papagena duet from Mozart’s Magic Flute sung by two fish and Verdi’s “Parigi o cara” from La Traviata sung by a couple planning the supper club of their dreams.
Ultimately, all candidates get their just desserts, ensuring a future full of good fun and good flavors.
Fish Fry was designed with touring in mind. It travels with 6 performers (four women and two men), a pianist, and a stage manager. Performances can be paired with Master Classes in singing, playwrighting, and tap dance, taught by the artistic leaders of both companies, who also perform in the production; Fresco Opera’s Melanie Cain, Danielle Dresden, from TAPIT/new works, author and lyricist for Fish Fry, and Donna Peckett, also from TAPIT/new works.
